AWKA — Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Peter Obi, has called for improved welfare for serving and retired military personnel, saying the nation’s gratitude to those who defend it must go beyond ceremonies and tributes.
Obi made the call on Friday in a message at the burial ceremony of retired Lieutenant General Isaac Obiakor in Awka, Anambra State.
Reflecting on a difficult week for the Nigerian military following the loss of personnel in an aircraft crash and another helicopter crash, Obi described the incidents as painful reminders of the sacrifices military personnel make in the service of the country.
He said retired military personnel deserved timely payment of pensions, accessible healthcare, decent housing and other support to enable them to live their retirement years in dignity and peace.
He added that their families should be assured that the sacrifices of their loved ones had not been forgotten.
Obi also stressed the need to prioritise the welfare of serving personnel through adequate equipment, proper training, effective medical care and the necessary support to enable them to perform their duties safely and effectively.
“Patriotism must go beyond ceremonies and tributes. It must be reflected in the practical care we provide for those who serve and those who have served,” he said.
He added that those who defended the nation also deserved a country that protected their dignity and well-being in return.
Obi prayed for the peaceful repose of Obiakor and comforted his family, while extending his condolences to families who had lost loved ones in the line of duty.
