Edo North senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has taken a swipe at the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his claim that he saved $150 million when he was Anambra State governor.
Oshiomhole launched the criticism while fielding questions in an interview on Symfoni TV.
He questioned how the funds were obtained when the Federal Government paid states’ allocations in naira.
According to the federal lawmaker, he was a member of the National Economic Council, NEC, with Obi when Nigerian governors requested to receive their federal allocations in dollars.
The former Edo state governor, who said the Federal Government rejected the proposal, stressed that Nigeria recognised naira as its currency.
“So all the allocations we receive are in naira. So I asked Obi, where did you get dollars to save? Did you receive naira from Abuja and go to buy dollars to save for Anambra State,” Oshiomhole said.
He described the claim as untrue, stating that the incumbent governor of Anambra state, Chukwuma Soludo, had tried to throw more light on the financial issues surrounding Obi’s record.
The ex-Nigeria Labour Congress chairman equally questioned Obi’s claim that he did not borrow money while serving as governor.
According to him, facilities obtained from the World Bank could constitute loans even when repayment was deferred.
