The national leadership of the All Progressives Congress APC has petitioned the Inspector General of Police IGP, Olatunji Disu, seeking the arrest and prosecution of one of its chieftains in Ogun State, Mr Abayomi Hunye, over allegations that he has been parading himself as the party’s governorship candidate for the state.
The petition, dated August 24, 2026, and signed by the Director of Administration, Office of Administration, APC, Ayoola Peter Olajolo, accused Hunye of taking to the public domain, including print and social media, to falsely present himself as the party’s flagbearer for the January 2027 governorship election.
“The Subject has notoriously and unlawfully taken to the public domain, including print and social media, parading himself as the Governorship Candidate of our Party for the forthcoming January 2027 election”, the party stated.
Olajolo insisted that Hunye’s claim to the ticket was baseless, describing it as part of a scheme to mislead the public and undermine peace in the state.
According to the petition, “this claim is false, fraudulent, and a deliberate act of impersonation designed to mislead the public and destabilize the peace of Ogun State.”
The party disclosed that Hunye had already been suspended from its fold since April 7, 2026, following a petition against him from his Tube Ward in Ipokia Local Government Area LGA, which was subsequently ratified by the Ogun State Working Committee and communicated to the National Headquarters.
The APC said the suspension followed allegations of anti-party activities, “nefarious dealings injurious to the image of the Party,” and deliberate acts aimed at causing disaffection among loyal members.
Reaffirming its position on the authentic candidates for the race, the party named Senator Adeola Solomon Olamilekan as its governorship candidate, alongside Kudirat Abiodun Balogun as his running mate, stating that they remained the only recognised standard-bearers of the APC in Ogun State.
The petition further prayed the IGP to “cause him to be prosecuted after investigation for Impersonation, conduct likely to cause a breach of peace, and violation of the Electoral Act, 2026,” and to “restrain him from further parading himself as a candidate to prevent a total breakdown of law and order in Ogun State.”
To support its claims, the APC national secretariat attached to the petition a certified copy of the suspension letter from Tube Ward, Ipokia LGA, the letter of ratification from the Ogun State Working Committee to the National Chairman, and the letter of suspension addressed to the Chairman of the APC 2026 Screening Committee for Governorship Aspirants.
The party pledged its full cooperation, along with that of its Ogun State chapter, with the police during the investigation, assuring readiness to provide further witness statements as may be required.
