President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared three days of national mourning following the tragic crash of a Nigerian Air Force aircraft in Igbokoda, Ondo State.
The NAF ATR-42 aircraft, reportedly identified as NGR 931, was on a routine flight from Benin City to Lagos when it crashed near a naval base in Igbokoda.
The incident has thrown the nation into mourning, with authorities confirming that there were fatalities. However, reports on the exact number of people on board have differed, with some accounts putting the figure at 25 while others have reported 32 deaths.
President Tinubu expressed his condolences to the families, colleagues and loved ones of those who lost their lives in the unfortunate incident, while calling on Nigerians to stand together in solidarity during the period of national mourning.
The crash has also raised concerns about the safety of military aviation in the country, as investigations are expected to determine what led to the aircraft going down.
The three-day mourning period is expected to provide an opportunity for Nigerians to honour the fallen personnel and reflect on the sacrifice made by members of the nation’s armed forces.
