A traditional high chief in Ayeka, Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State, High Chief Akinwalere Akinola, has been shot dead during the burial rites of a fellow traditional title holder.

The incident occurred while members of the community were gathered for the funeral rites of their late colleague.

According to sources, a firearm was discharged during the ceremony, with the bullet striking Akinola in the head.

“During the programme, a firearm was discharged. The bullet struck High Chief Akinwalere directly in the head, resulting in his instant death,” a source said.

The incident reportedly threw participants into confusion, while the circumstances surrounding the discharge remained unclear.

Although some reports suggested that the shooting may have resulted from an accidental discharge, the police have not established the cause.

Confirming the incident, the Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said one suspect had been arrested.

“One suspect arrested. Meanwhile, thorough investigation has commenced,” Jimoh said.

Jimoh added that the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the death and determine responsibility for the incident.
