One person killed in Kwara auto crash

One person was killed in an auto crash which occurred on Sunday at Iye-Maja junction, along Oko-Olowo highway of Ilorin, Kwara State.

According to reports, the incident occurred at about 18:35hours when the commercial bus with registration number DTH840SA carrying 21 passengers lost control after a tyre bust.

The vehicle subsequently somersaulted and later caught fire.

Spokesman of the State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle disclosed that firefighters swiftly moved to the scene immediately and commenced emergency operations. 

“The passengers were evacuated from the vehicle, with those who sustained injuries taken to the hospital for medical attention.

“Sadly, one person was confirmed dead in the incident,” he added.

The Fire Service expressed its sympathy to the family of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery.

Chief Fire Officer, Alabi Muhammed, commiserated with the family of the deceased and urged motorists, particularly commercial vehicle operators, to always ensure that their vehicles were properly maintained and roadworthy before embarking on journeys.

He emphasized the importance of regular inspection of tyres, braking systems, electrical components and other critical parts of vehicles, noting that early detection of faults could help prevent serious road emergencies.

Alabi further urged motorists to exercise caution on the highways and immediately report emergencies to the appropriate response agencies.
