One person has been shot dead by gunmen along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway in Kogi State.
The incident occurred on Thursday, August 27, at about 5 p.m., around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, armed assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire at motorists along the highway.
A blue Toyota Corolla was later found abandoned on the road, with the deceased, identified by the police as Ishaq Yunusa, inside the vehicle.
The police said another occupant of the vehicle was taken into the bush by the attackers, prompting a joint security operation to locate and rescue the abducted victim.
The deceased was moved to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for autopsy.
The police have since intensified operations in the area, with security personnel combing the surrounding forest in an effort to rescue the abducted victim and apprehend the attackers.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Kankarofi, directed sustained operations to secure the affected corridor and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.
The Command has also urged motorists and residents along the route to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.
The police say further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
“The Kogi State Police Command has received reports of an armed attack along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway, particularly around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area, on Thursday, 27 August 2026.
“The incident occurred at about 1700hrs when armed assailants emerged from the surrounding bush and opened sporadic fire at motorists. A blue Toyota Corolla was subsequently found abandoned along the highway,” the police statement read in part.
“The driver, identified as Hon. Ishaq Yunusa, was found dead in the vehicle, while another occupant was taken into the bush by the assailants.
“The Command, working with other security agencies, has intensified operations within the area, with personnel currently combing the surrounding forest in a determined effort to locate and rescue the abducted victim and track down those responsible.
“The deceased has been evacuated to Grimard Hospital, Anyigba, for autopsy, while the Command is pursuing all available leads in connection with the incident,” it added.
