Onikate to honour Lagos businessman Rilwan Bamgbala with Okanlomo title

The Onikate of Ikate Surulere, Oba Lateef Atanda Adams, has announced that businessman and hospitality guru, Rilwan Bamgbala will be conferred with the traditional title of Okanlomo of Ikate Surulere, while his wife, Mrs. Oluwadamilola Bamgbala, will be honoured as Yeye Okanlomo Ikate Surulere.

The announcement is part of activities marking the monarch’s 10th coronation anniversary. The installation ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Ikate Surulere Palace on July 22, where several other individuals are also expected to receive traditional chieftaincy titles in recognition of their contributions to the community.

According to the palace, Bamgbala was selected in recognition of his business activities in Surulere and his role in creating employment opportunities through his hospitality ventures. Oba Adams said the decision was approved by his traditional council as part of efforts to acknowledge individuals considered to have made meaningful contributions to the development of Ikate Surulere.

The Okanlomo title, which translates to “the beloved child of the community” or “one who brings joy to the community,” is one of the traditional honours bestowed by the palace and reflects the recipient’s relationship with the community. Bamgbala operates a number of hospitality businesses in Surulere, including Blueroom Lounge, as well as other business interests within the area.

In addition to his business activities, Bamgbala is involved in community outreach through the Rilwan Bamgbala Foundation, which provides support for vulnerable individuals and families. He was also recently appointed Director for Special Duties in the Lagos State chapter of the CityBoy Movement.

The conferment comes as Oba Adams marks a decade on the throne. Throughout his reign, the monarch has overseen a number of community-focused initiatives and has said his anniversary celebrations are intended to recognise individuals and organisations whose efforts have contributed to the growth and development of Ikate Surulere. The anniversary programme also includes empowerment activities and other events for residents.

The installation ceremony is expected to bring together traditional rulers, community leaders, business figures, political office holders and residents for a celebration of the community’s cultural heritage and leadership. It will also serve as one of the highlights of the activities commemorating the monarch’s 10th coronation anniversary.

The conferment of the titles on Rilwan and Oluwadamilola Bamgbala is among several honours expected to be presented during the anniversary celebrations, reflecting the continued role of traditional institutions in recognising community service, entrepreneurship and local development.
