Osun Guber: AAC demands immediate redeployment of Police Commissioner

The African Action Congress, AAC, has called on the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, to immediately redeploy the Commissioner of Police in Osun State, CP Ibrahim Gotan, for allegedly threatening peace and democratic processes ahead of the August 15, 2026 governorship election.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by the party’s Publicity Secretary, Akinlade Semiu Babatunde, the AAC alleged that the police command had lost the confidence of many residents and urged the police leadership to take urgent steps to restore public trust.

The party also alleged that there were plans to destabilise Osun State before the governorship election, claiming that such efforts were aimed at creating conditions that could lead to the postponement of the poll and the installation of an unelected administrator.

According to the statement, “The people of Osun will stoutly resist any sinister plot by the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led APC Federal Government to impose an illegal administrative government on Osun State.”

The AAC claimed that the state had witnessed an increase in political violence despite the recent visit of IGP Disu, describing the security situation as increasingly volatile in the weeks leading to the election.

The party referenced an incident at the Old Garage area of Osogbo on Monday, alleging that armed thugs attempted to seize control of the motor park, causing panic among traders, commercial drivers and residents. It described the incident as a brazen show of political impunity.

The statement also alleged that cases of political killings, kidnappings, intimidation and attacks against opposition members had been recorded across the state, while claiming that those responsible had not been brought to justice.

The AAC accused the Osun State Police Command of failing in its constitutional responsibility to protect lives and property, alleging that police officers were seen in a viral video fraternising with individuals it described as political thugs.

According to the party, “The Command has abandoned its constitutional duty of protecting lives and property and has degenerated into a partisan outfit. The police should remain neutral and uphold professionalism throughout the electoral process.”

The party maintained that Osun State must not be subjected to any unconstitutional political arrangement, insisting that the governorship election should hold as scheduled on August 15 to allow eligible voters to exercise their democratic rights.

The AAC also appealed to civil society organisations, labour unions, youth groups and the international community to closely monitor developments in Osun, saying vigilance was necessary to safeguard democracy and ensure a peaceful electoral process.

“The election must hold on August 15th. Our people must be allowed to vote. There is no room for anarchy in Osun,” the statement added.
