Osun State Government has directed security agencies to intensify investigations into recent killings linked to cult violence and a leadership dispute within the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW.
The Special Adviser to Governor Ademola Adeleke on security matters, Samuel Ojo, disclosed this on Wednesday, assuring residents that the administration would not protect anyone found culpable in the violent incidents.
Ojo spoke in Osogbo following concerns over the recent loss of lives in different parts of the state.
He said the government had taken steps to prevent further bloodshed after about five people were reportedly killed in incidents associated with cult attacks and the NURTW leadership succession crisis.
According to him, “An emergency security meeting was convened on Wednesday to address the deteriorating security situation and coordinate measures to restore peace.
“The meeting was chaired by the Deputy Governor, Kola Adewusi, who represented Governor Ademola Adeleke at the gathering of security commanders and senior government officials.
“It was as a result of the serial killings that the governor of the state called for an emergency meeting of all the service commanders today (Wednesday).”
He listed the participants as the Commissioner of Police, the Director of the Department of State Services, the Army representative, and commanders of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, Immigration, Corrections, Civil Defence and Amotekun.
He said the security chiefs had assured the state government that efforts would be intensified to prevent further loss of lives and restore the peaceful atmosphere previously experienced in Osun.
Ojo also rejected allegations that the Adeleke administration was shielding those accused of involvement in the killing of Olalekan Oyeyemi, a development reportedly connected to the NURTW leadership succession dispute.
“The state government is not shielding anyone. The governor had already said that no one should be spared in the investigation, and that the police and the DSS should investigate the case thoroughly and fish out the killers of those people.
“The law must take its course against them. The Commissioner of Police and other service commanders are working to bring those responsible for the killings to justice,” he added.
