…Names Oyewale to head NURTW caretaker committee
By Shina Abubakar, Osogbo
The Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON), Osun State chapter, has constituted caretaker management committees to oversee the affairs of transport unions across the state following the leadership crisis in the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW).
The development follows the suspension of the activities of transport unions in public motor parks across the state after a dispute within the NURTW led to violence.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the Osun State ALGON Chairman, Samuel Idowu, said the suspension of transport union activities and the existing NURTW leadership would remain in force pending further review.
He explained that the caretaker committees would oversee the affairs of the affected unions while consultations continue with their respective national secretariats on the emergence of substantive state executives.
According to him, the decision followed consultations with representatives of the NURTW, the Road Transport Employees Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), motorcycle and tricycle unions, as well as traditional rulers and other stakeholders.
Under the arrangement, Chief Kazeem Oyewale was appointed Chairman of the NURTW caretaker committee, while Mutiu Ayinde and Luqman Ahmed will serve as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.
For the RTEAN, Rasheed Ayinde was named Chairman, with Mufutau Adebisi as Secretary and Wahab Maruf Dodo as Treasurer.
The caretaker committee for the motorcycle and tricycle unions will be headed by Ismaila Raimi, with Adebayo Tajudeen and Tajudeen Akeem serving as Secretary and Treasurer, respectively.
Idowu directed that all union property be handed over to the newly appointed caretaker officials and urged security agencies to provide the necessary support to ensure a smooth transition.
He commended the Nigeria Police Force for its intervention during the recent crisis, saying the prompt response helped restore calm to motor parks across the state.
The ALGON chairman also appealed to transport operators, traditional rulers and other stakeholders to cooperate with the caretaker committees to ensure the smooth operation of motor parks in the 30 local government areas and the Ife East Area Office, Modakeke.
Earlier, ALGON had suspended the activities of transport unions in public motor parks across the state and directed security agencies to take over the facilities following the outbreak of violence arising from the leadership dispute within the NURTW.
