The Kaduna State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kaduna State Chapter, has urged Governor Uba Sani to take responsibility for the $350 million loan he championed, saying that blaming former Governor Nasir El-Rufai for N6.7 billion in monthly deductions is not a true reflection of good leadership.
A statement issued by the state party chairman, Sir Edward Percy Masha, said, “The attention of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kaduna State Chapter, has been drawn to the recent remarks by His Excellency, Governor Uba Sani, on Channels Television, where he attributed Kaduna State’s current burden of N6.7 billion in monthly loan deductions to the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
“While we acknowledge the governor’s disclosure of the magnitude of the state’s monthly debt deductions, we strongly reject any attempt to rewrite history or shift responsibility.”
Masha explained that in March 2020, while serving as senator representing Kaduna Central and chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Senator Uba Sani played a leading role in the 9th Senate’s approval of the $350 million World Bank loan for Kaduna State, after the 8th Senate had rejected it.
The PDP chairman claimed that Uba Sani had said, “I can vouch for the Kaduna State Government under Mallam Nasir El-Rufai to prudently deploy the loan; in fact, hold me responsible if Governor Nasir El-Rufai fails or disappoints on this score.”
According to Masha, “Governor Uba Sani cannot lead the campaign for a loan, publicly defend it, ask to be held responsible for its prudent utilisation, and then, years later, present the resulting repayment burden as though he had no role in the process. The people of Kaduna State deserve accountability, transparency, and measurable results.”
Masha noted that the N6.7 billion monthly deduction is taking place under the current administration, saying that rather than engaging in a blame game, the governor should explain clearly to the people how his government intends to manage the debt burden, protect essential services and reduce the pressure on Kaduna’s finances.
The PDP urged Governor Uba Sani to stop looking backwards for excuses and start looking forward with concrete solutions, saying that history cannot be rewritten, public records cannot be erased and responsibility cannot be transferred simply because circumstances have changed.
