AWKA — The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 25-year-old man, Olisa Oyelu, alias “Obele,” over alleged kidnapping and armed robbery and his suspected involvement in a 2023 kidnapping incident in which a victim was killed.
The command said Oyelu was arrested in the early hours of Wednesday, September 23, by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, following sustained intelligence gathering and investigation.
In a statement on Thursday, the command’s spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said Oyelu was allegedly a member of an armed robbery and kidnapping gang led by a suspected criminal identified as “Pincode.”
According to the statement, the suspect was allegedly involved in the 2023 kidnapping operation that resulted in the death of the victim.
“The Anambra State Police Command operatives attached to the State Criminal Investigation Department in the early hours of September 23 arrested Olisa Oyelu, alias ‘Obele’, aged 25 years, the last identified member of the notorious armed robbery and kidnapping gang led by a suspected criminal known as ‘Pincode’, in connection with a 2023 kidnapping incident which resulted in the death of the victim,” the statement said.
Ikenga said the arrest followed an extensive investigation aimed at identifying, arresting and prosecuting all persons allegedly connected with the incident.
He said the command would, after completing its investigation, hand Oyelu over to the correctional authorities, where Pincode and four other suspects are already being held pending the determination of their cases by the court.
“The arrest represents a significant development in the ongoing investigation and reiterates the commitment of the command to ensuring that all persons found to have participated in the crime are brought to justice,” the police said.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Ama, commended the operatives for their perseverance, dedication and intelligence-led investigation.
Ama assured residents that the command would continue to pursue suspected criminal elements within and outside the state and ensure that suspects were brought before the law.
He also urged members of the public to continue providing the police with credible and timely information, stressing that security remained a shared responsibility.
