The Abia State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old suspected robber accused of using a stainless steel lighter designed to resemble a pistol to intimidate and rob members of the public.
The suspect, identified simply as Chidera, from Isiochi in Umunneochi Local Government Area, was arrested by operatives of the Isuochi Divisional Police Headquarters following credible intelligence.
Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said the suspect allegedly used the pistol-like lighter to create the impression that he was armed, forcing victims to surrender their valuables.
She said the suspect was arrested on July 5, while other items believed to be linked to his alleged criminal activities were recovered during the operation.
“The suspect is known to be habitually robbing unsuspecting members of the public using a stainless lighter designed to resemble a pistol, thereby instilling fear in his victims and dispossessing them of their belongings,” Chinaka said.
She added that investigations were ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s alleged activities and identify possible accomplices.
According to the police spokesperson, the suspect will be arraigned in court upon the conclusion of investigations.
The command said the arrest formed part of its sustained intelligence-led operations against violent crime and street robbery across the state.
It urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements or criminal activities to the nearest police station or through its emergency response channels.
The police also reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property through proactive policing and collaboration with members of the public.
