Police in Yobe State have arrested two people over the death of a newborn baby girl whose body was allegedly hidden in a box and dumped behind a mosque in Damaturu.

The Yobe State Police Command said the arrests followed an investigation launched after officers received a distress call on June 23.

According to police spokesperson SP Dungus Abdulkarim, officers from the Violent Crime Response Unit responded to reports of the incident in the Anguwar Boka area of Damaturu.

He said, “On June 23, 2026, operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit responded to a distress call concerning the alleged killing of a newborn baby and the concealment of her remains in Anguwar Boka area of Damaturu.

“Initial findings indicate that the newborn baby girl was allegedly strangled, after which her remains were hidden inside a box and dumped behind a mosque in the area.”

He added that detectives swiftly arrested two suspects, who are now assisting investigators.

“Swift police intervention resulted in the arrest of two suspects. They are presently in custody and assisting investigators as efforts continue to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.

The police said investigations are still ongoing and promised to ensure justice is served.
