IBADAN — The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that a traditional ruler in Oriire Local Government Area was invited for questioning in connection with the ongoing investigation into the abduction of teachers and schoolchildren in the area.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, described the reports as false, misleading and unfounded, insisting that the traditional ruler, High Chief Tajudeen Abioye, the Elesinele of Esinele, had not been invited by the police over the incident.

“The Command wishes to categorically state that this report is false, unfounded and misleading. At no time was the said traditional ruler invited for questioning in relation to the ongoing investigation,” Ayanlade said.

The police spokesperson alleged that the publication was part of a deliberate attempt by criminal elements to spread misinformation, create division and undermine ongoing security operations aimed at securing the release of the abducted victims and bringing those responsible to justice.

“The Command views this publication as part of a deliberate campaign of misinformation and disinformation orchestrated by criminal elements aimed at creating division, generating unnecessary tension and undermining coordinated security efforts currently directed at securing the safe rescue of the abducted victims and bringing perpetrators to justice,” he stated.

Ayanlade urged members of the public to disregard the report and avoid sharing unverified information capable of jeopardising ongoing security operations.

“Members of the public are therefore advised to disregard the report in its entirety and refrain from sharing unverified information capable of jeopardising ongoing security operations,” he added.

The Command reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with relevant stakeholders and other security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted teachers and schoolchildren.

“The Oyo State Police Command remains committed to working in synergy with relevant stakeholders and security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the victims,” Ayanlade said.

He also appealed to residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible and timely information through appropriate channels.

The police assured the public that efforts were ongoing to secure the victims’ release and ensure that those behind the abduction are apprehended and prosecuted.
