The Cross River State Police Command has confirmed the recovery of the body of a Deputy Superintendent of Correctional Service, DSC, Michael Apepende, from a drainage channel in Calabar.
The body was recovered at about 10:30am on Friday along Barrack Road, near Nigerian Chronicle House, Calabar.
The police said officers from Akim Division responded to information about the discovery and recovered the body from the drainage channel.
The deceased was identified as a personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service.
His remains have been deposited at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for autopsy.
The autopsy is expected to help determine the circumstances and cause of his death.
The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said the command had commenced investigation into the incident.
He added that further details would be made available as the investigation progresses.
The police urged members of the public to avoid speculation while the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death are being investigated.
