The Kaduna State Police Command has rescued nine persons abducted by suspected bandits in Birnin Gwari Local Government Area of the state but lost two officers in a subsequent ambush.

In a statement, the command’s spokesperson, DSP Mansir Hassan, said the operation followed credible intelligence received at about 12:45pm on Wednesday, June 24, indicating that about 15 armed bandits had abducted several farmers around Unguwan Sa’idu village, a few kilometres from Birnin Gwari town.

The Area Commander, Birnin Gwari, and the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilised patrol teams, including personnel from the Police Mobile Force and KADVIS, and proceeded to the area on a rescue mission.

On arrival, the security operatives engaged the bandits in a gun battle, forcing them to flee into the bush on motorcycles.

The police launched a pursuit operation, compelling the suspects to abandon their captives and escape.

The rescued victims were identified by the police as Hudu Rabiu, Yusuf Sagir, Sagir Rabiu, Muhammad Kabir, Kabir Lawal, Idris Abubakar, Mustapha Zayyanu, Kabiru Rabiu and Usman Lawal.

Police said the victims were found tied with ropes and abandoned by their abductors. They were rescued unharmed and later reunited with their families.

However, while the security team was returning from the rescue mission, suspected bandits ambushed the officers along their route and fatally shot two policemen.

The Kaduna State Commissioner of Police, Rabiu Muhammad, expressed condolences to the families, friends and colleagues of the fallen officers, describing their deaths as a sacrifice made in the service of the nation.

He said the officers demonstrated courage, dedication and selflessness in protecting the public from criminal elements.

The command said investigations and tactical operations were ongoing to track down those responsible for the attack and bring them to justice.
