Residents of Owa-Onire community, a tourist centre in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, have totally deserted their ancestral home following persistent attacks by armed bandits.
A viral video clip of the community showed that the whole community is now occupied by animals as the residents fled the town to safer areas for their lives.
The Nigeria Police have, however, taken control of the Kwara South Senatorial District and the affected community with the hope of restoring security.
DAILY POST reports that the Coordinator of the Kwara South Joint Security network, Zubair Olaitan, led police operatives to some of the deserted communities for an assessment of the volatile security situation in the district during which the video clip was recorded.
Olaitan recently commended the efforts of security forces along the border areas of Kwara and Kogi States but called for more support from indigenes of the senatorial district to provide a haven for the residents.
DAILY POST reports that communities in Kwara South and North Senatorial Districts have remained the hotbeds of bandits’ operations despite efforts of security forces to flush them out of the troubled communities.
Over 170 captives, mostly children and women of Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of the state, are still in bandits’ captivity, and others abducted in Omugo, Ifelodun Local Government Area, in Kwara South, during a church service are yet to secure their freedom, while some have reportedly died.
