Revenue Deficit: Senate to summon NNPCL, NUPRC, CBN, others over non-remittance claims

ABUJA — The Senate has directed its Committee on Finance to prepare a strong motion compelling revenue-generating agencies and government-owned enterprises that failed to honour invitations to appear before it and account for revenues generated and remitted into the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF).

The move followed concerns over the refusal of some Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to attend ongoing interactive sessions on internally generated revenue and operating surplus remittances.

The motion, expected to be sponsored by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Senator Sani Musa (APC, Niger East), will seek to compel affected agencies to provide explanations on alleged non-remittances to the CRF between 2023 and 2025.

Among the agencies expected to appear before the committee are the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

Others include the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), National Examinations Council (NECO), Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation (NDIC), Nigerian Shippers’ Council and National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON).

The Senate resolution followed a point of order raised by Senator Musa during Wednesday’s plenary, where he expressed concern over what he described as the refusal of some agencies to honour invitations from the committee.

The Senate Committee on Finance had, since the beginning of last week, commenced an interactive review of the financial records of various agencies to determine their compliance with statutory remittances of internally generated revenue and operating surpluses into the CRF.

The exercise is aimed at assessing revenue performance and ensuring accountability among government institutions.
