ABUJA — The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has commended Nigeria’s security forces for the successful rescue of abducted schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, while mourning an Army officer who lost his life during the operation.

In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party praised the intelligence-led, multi-agency operation that led to the rescue of the victims after more than 56 days in captivity.

The SDP described the operation as a demonstration of professionalism, coordination and commitment by the nation’s security agencies.

The party also urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts to address poverty, hunger and social injustice, which it said contribute to insecurity across the country.

According to the statement, the victims were abducted on May 15, 2026, from Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, Community Grammar School, Esiele, and LA Primary School in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.

The party noted that while the abduction underscored the country’s security challenges, the successful rescue reflected what could be achieved through effective leadership and coordinated action.

It also paid tribute to 28-year-old Lieutenant Felix Ademe Isaac, who died during the rescue operation.

“The Party salutes the courage and sacrifice of the fallen officer for restoring joy to the affected families. His service and sacrifice will be remembered,” the statement said.

The SDP further called on the government to tackle the socio-economic challenges it believes fuel insecurity, expressing hope that Nigeria’s democracy would increasingly translate into improved security, protection of lives and property, and sustainable national development.
