The Abia State Government has banned commercial motorcycle operations in the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba and Ohafia, citing security and public safety concerns.

The ban, approved by Governor Alex Otti, will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026, and is one of the most extensive transport regulations introduced by the administration.

Announcing the decision, the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, said the measure forms part of a broader strategy to strengthen security, improve traffic management and create a more organised urban transportation system.

According to him, all commercial motorcycle operators are required to vacate the affected metropolitan areas before the commencement date.

The government warned that anyone found violating the directive would be arrested, while the motorcycles involved would be confiscated.

Security agencies have been directed to enforce the ban, while residents and transport stakeholders have been urged to cooperate with authorities to ensure a smooth implementation of the policy.

The state government said the decision followed growing concerns over security challenges and the increasing influx of individuals engaged in commercial motorcycle operations across the state.

Officials maintained that the measure is aimed at enhancing public safety and maintaining order in the affected urban centres.
