Serigne Moustapha Sy, the spiritual leader of the Moustarchidine movement and founder of the PUR political party and son of the former caliph Serigne Cheikh Ahmed Tidiane Sy Al Makhtoum, took the opportunity of the Mawlid celebration on Tuesday evening in Tivavoune to settle some family scores, and shed light on his current relationship with former prime minister and current speaker of the National Assembly, Ousmane Sonko.
Putting an end to the rumours and interpretations surrounding the absence of his former ally and Pastef leader, the leader of the Moustarchidines was keen to clarify the situation categorically. According to him, the lack of a meeting with Sonko was the result of a deliberate choice on his part.
“I’ve heard people interpret Sonko’s absence…But I want to make everything clear. If you haven’t seen him here, it’s because I refused to receive him despite his insistence. That’s all,” the religious leader stated firmly, adding
“[on the other hand] Diomaye Faye did everything he had to do.”
Serigne Moustapha Sy praised President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s approach, stressing that the latter had adopted the expected exemplary conduct.
According to him, President Faye visited him several times and regularly sent emissaries to consult him on the country’s major policy directions and progress. “President Diomaye did what he had to do,” he declared.
