Seven persons have died following a commercial Siena bus crash into a stationary heavy-duty truck along the Okene–Osara–Lokoja Highway in Kogi State.
The accident, which occurred on Sunday in Osara, also left three other passengers with varying degrees of injuries.
Confirming the incident, the Kogi State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Lawal Fagge, said the Siena bus was travelling from Auchi in Edo State to Abuja when the crash occurred.
According to him, the bus, which was carrying passengers heading to different destinations, including Abaji in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), suffered a tyre burst before ramming into a truck that had been parked by the roadside for repairs.
Fagge blamed the fatal crash on excessive speeding, driver fatigue, and the tyre burst.
“Six occupants of the bus and the truck’s motor boy died, while three others sustained injuries. Our rescue team responded immediately and evacuated the injured to a nearby hospital for medical attention,” Fagge added.
The FRSC commander said the bodies of the deceased had been deposited at the morgue, while the injured victims were receiving treatment at a nearby hospital.
Fagge urged motorists to obey speed limits, ensure proper vehicle maintenance before setting out on any trip, and remain attentive while driving.
He also advised drivers to exercise extra caution when approaching broken-down or parked vehicles on the road, noting that adherence to basic safety measures can help reduce road crashes and save lives.
