SOKOTO: The Sokoto State Government has invested more than N1 billion in the acquisition and deployment of modern digital broadcast equipment for the state owned Rima Radio, Rima FM and Rima Television, as part of a sweeping drive to reposition the stations for wider reach and enhanced service delivery.
The Managing Director, Sokoto State Media Corporation, Alhaji Labaran Lumo Dundaye, disclosed this on Saturday while addressing the Congress of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Sokoto State Council, at the NUJ Press Centre, Zuru Road, Sokoto.
“The Sokoto State Government has expended over N1 billion on the provision of ultramodern digital facilities for Rima Radio, Rima FM and Rima Television to strengthen their operations and reposition the stations for the demands of modern broadcasting.”
Dundaye said the newly provided facilities include two transmitters, sophisticated editing suites, modern cameras and other essential digital broadcasting equipment, describing the investment as a major intervention aimed at transforming the technical capacity of the state-owned media establishments.
“These facilities are part of the government’s deliberate efforts to fully digitalize the operations of the three stations and ensure that their contents reach audiences beyond Sokoto to the global community through strengthened information and communication technology infrastructure.”
He further disclosed that the state government had provided five operational vehicles to enhance mobility, field reporting and the overall effectiveness of the three broadcast stations.
“The provision of five operational vehicles will further strengthen the capacity of the stations to cover events, undertake field assignments and discharge their responsibilities effectively across the state.”
The Managing Director stressed that the combination of modern broadcast infrastructure and improved operational mobility would enhance the ability of the stations to compete effectively in an increasingly digital and technology-driven media environment.
“Journalists in Sokoto have demonstrated remarkable commitment to peace, professionalism and responsible journalism, and their contributions to the development of the state, particularly on sensitive security and religious matters, are widely recognised.”
Dundaye also commended the leadership of the NUJ Sokoto State Council under Comrade Usman Mohammed Binji for sustaining unity among journalists and institutionalising regular congresses as a platform for professional engagement and collective decision making.
“The current NUJ leadership deserves commendation for sustaining unity among members and consistently organising congresses, which provide an important platform for addressing issues affecting the journalism profession and the wider society.”
He also acknowledged the Sokoto State Government for allowing the Media Corporation to operate with professional independence, stressing that editorial responsibility and journalistic ethics remained critical to the credibility of state-owned media organisations.
“We appreciate the state government for allowing the corporation to operate independently and in accordance with the ethics and professional standards of journalism.”
The investment comes against the backdrop of rapid technological transformation in the broadcast industry, where digital infrastructure, reliable transmission systems and modern production facilities have increasingly become essential to expanding audience reach and maintaining competitive media operations.
