The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Nonye Soludo, has reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to protecting the dignity, rights and welfare of elderly citizens.

In a message marking the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Mrs Soludo said the government would continue to stand in solidarity with senior citizens, describing them as custodians of wisdom, culture and societal values.

She stressed that older persons deserve to age with respect, care and security, free from neglect, discrimination, exploitation or any form of abuse.

“Our elderly men and women deserve to age with respect, care, and security. We should ensure that they are free from neglect, discrimination, exploitation, or any form of abuse,” she said.

Mrs Soludo called on families, communities and institutions to create environments where older people feel valued, heard and protected.

She added that the treatment of the elderly reflects the moral strength of society, urging collective action to promote kindness, inclusion and support for senior citizens.

“Let us use this day as a reminder that how we treat our elders reflects the strength of our humanity,” she said.

She further appealed for sustained efforts to ensure that senior citizens enjoy dignity and a better quality of life.
