Somali Clans sign peace agreement to end long-running conflict in Galmudug

Horn Observer about 2 hours 2 mins read
Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre attended the ceremony, where traditional leaders Ugaas Mohamed Ugaas Kayse and Ugaas Hassan Ugaas Mohamed Ugaas Nuur signed the agreement. The accord seeks to end a long-standing conflict between the two clans and promote reconciliation, mutual respect, good-neighborly relations and peaceful coexistence. Barre, accompanied by Galmudug officials, federal ministers, lawmakers and senior security officials, urged the communities to uphold the commitments reached under the agreement. He said lasting peace would create better conditions for stability, development and improved livelihoods in Balanballe and surrounding areas. The agreement was signed in a ceremony attended by community members and families affected by the conflict. The deal establishes a framework for ending hostilities and cycles of revenge while strengthening cooperation between the neighboring communities. As part of his visit, Somali Prime Minister laid the foundation stone for a Peace House in Balanballe. The facility is expected to serve as a venue for reconciliation efforts, community dialogue and peacebuilding initiatives. The federal government also plans to support several development projects in the town, including a school for orphans, a football stadium and a modern police station. Officials also said the government would upgrade the local airport and improve public infrastructure. The visit came as the prime minister also attended a passing-out ceremony for newly recruited members of Somalia's National Intelligence and Security Agency, known as NISA. The peace agreement marks another effort by Somali authorities and traditional leaders to resolve local conflicts through reconciliation and negotiated settlements, particularly in areas where communal disputes have fueled recurring violence.
