South-east governors will support Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 – Uzodimma

Imo State Governor and Chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has said the governors of the five South-East states have resolved to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027, citing what he described as the administration’s developmental interventions in the region.

Uzodimma made the remark in Owerri during a meeting with traditional rulers and members of the Imo State Elders Council.

According to him, although the governors belong to different political parties, they have assessed the Federal Government’s performance in the South-East and agreed to work with the Tinubu administration.

“The South-East has decided. Our people judge governments by performance and not by political sentiments. The evidence is on the ground,” he said.

The governor added that the five governors would soon pay a joint courtesy visit to President Tinubu to further strengthen collaboration with the Federal Government.

Uzodimma, who also chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum, cautioned politicians against using Igbo platforms to spread what he described as unfounded propaganda.

“The Igbos are too discerning and too results-driven to trade tangible infrastructure for political speeches. The South-East will stand with Tinubu’s administration that has favoured them,” he said.

He said the governors’ decision was informed by projects and policies implemented by the Tinubu administration in the region, including the establishment of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), which he described as a long-standing aspiration of the people.

According to him, President Tinubu signed the South East Development Commission Act into law on July 24, 2024, inaugurated its governing board in February 2025 and ensured that the commission commenced operations with funding.

Uzodimma also cited the rehabilitation and commencement of commercial operations on the Port Harcourt–Aba rail line, as well as the approval of the $3 billion reconstruction of the Eastern Rail Corridor linking Port Harcourt to Maiduguri through the South-East.

On road infrastructure, he highlighted the construction of the Phase 2A and 2B access roads to the Second Niger Bridge, including the dual carriageway linking Umunya, Ogbunike, Ogidi, Nkpor and Asaba.

He also referenced the approval of the 108-kilometre Otuocha–Anam–Abaji Road and the 150-kilometre Oba–Nnewi–Uga–Ihube/Okigwe Junction Road, saying the projects would improve connectivity and economic activities in the region.

The governor further said the South-East had benefited from national policies of the Tinubu administration, including increased allocations to states, the student loan scheme, security initiatives and fiscal reforms.

Speaking on developments in Imo State, Uzodimma urged members of the Imo State Elders Council and traditional rulers to continue supporting the implementation of the state’s Charter of Equity.

He said the law, enacted by the Imo State House of Assembly, was intended to institutionalise fairness in the rotation of political power and promote peace and stability.

“The Charter of Equity is real, and I need your mandate to implement it because that is what will bring lasting peace to Imo State,” he said.

Uzodimma maintained that his successor should emerge in line with the Charter of Equity and possess the integrity, character and commitment needed to sustain the achievements of his administration.

He warned against attempts to undermine the charter for political reasons.

“I will take the fight personally to protect the Charter of Equity. I will stop at nothing,” he said.

The governor also advocated increased investment in skills acquisition and vocational education as a strategy for reducing unemployment, tackling crime and promoting sustainable economic growth.

He urged traditional rulers to continue supporting government initiatives aimed at maintaining peace, fostering development and ensuring inclusive progress across the state.
