Super Eagles goalkeeper, Okonkwo hailed after outstanding debut for new club

Daily Post about 1 hour 2 mins read

Super Eagles goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo has received glowing praise from Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones following his outstanding debut for the Championship club after his season-long loan transfer from Wrexham.

The transfer was completed in time for the Nigerian goalkeeper to be included in the starting eleven for Saturday’s match against West Ham United, where he contributed to the Addicks’ 2-1 victory.

Charlton established dominance in the match with goals from Lloyd Jones and Tyreece Campbell, while Joël Piroe’s strike in the 74th minute served merely as a consolation for the Hammers.

Okonkwo was called upon multiple times and made several crucial saves to assist his new team in maintaining their lead.

The Super Eagles goalkeeper confidently handled Castellanos’ header during first-half stoppage time and executed a one-handed save to thwart Piroe’s attempt from the edge of the penalty area.

The 24-year-old also deflected a shot from Castellanos in the second half and made an excellent tip over the crossbar to deny Manchester City loanee Divine Mukasa.

Jones expressed his satisfaction with Okonkwo’s performance and his demeanour since arriving at the club.

“Arthur Okonkwo was exceptional. It is a pleasure to work with him. He has demonstrated a genuine eagerness to join the football club,” he stated, as reported by Sky Sports.

Okonkwo is now in the final year of his contract with parent club Wrexham and will depart the Red Dragons as a free agent at the conclusion of the season if his contract is not renewed.
