The Taraba State House of Assembly has received a proposed supplementary budget of over 148 billion naira for consideration and approval.
The proposal was contained in an executive communication forwarded to the House by the Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas.
The executive communication, read by the Speaker of the Taraba State House of Assembly, John Kizito Bonzena, puts the total supplementary budget at 148 billion, 262 million, 489 thousand, 531 naira.
According to the communication, the proposal targets strategic needs of the state that were not captured in the 2026 Appropriation Law.
It states that the 2026 Supplementary Budget and Revision is also necessary to strengthen security, protect lives and property, and improve the general well-being of the people of the state.
Following the first reading of the bill by the Clerk of the House, Salmuna Amos Sani, the House proceeded to the second reading after a motion was moved by the Deputy Majority Leader to enable the bill pass through both stages on the same legislative day.
The Deputy Majority Leader thereafter briefed the lawmakers on the summary of the Supplementary Budget, explaining the need for the proposal in view of changes in government policies and emerging priorities.
The Clerk of the House, Salmuna Amos Sani, subsequently read the long title of the bill for the second time.
The Speaker, John Kizito Bonzena, then referred the bill to the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation to conduct a public hearing and report back to the House within one week.
In another development, the House has adopted the report of its Committee on Education on the Taraba State University, Jalingo Re-enactment Bill, 2025.
The report was laid before the House by the Chairman of the Committee, Josiah Angye Yaro, after which the House dissolved into the Committee of the Whole, chaired by the Speaker, to consider the report.
Presenting the report, Josiah Angye Yaro said the committee interfaced with relevant stakeholders and arrived at a number of recommendations.
Among them was that the appointment of the Vice-Chancellor of the University shall be for a single, non-renewable five-year tenure, with no provision for reappointment or extension of tenure.
The committee also recommended that the phrase “Investigation Committee” in Section 55, Subsection 1(d), be deleted and replaced with “Disciplinary Committee”, to align the provision with the Nigerian university system.
After deliberations, scrutiny and observations by lawmakers, they adopted the committee’s report.
The Speaker, John Kizito Bonzena, subsequently referred the bill to the Rules and Business Committee for scheduling of the third reading.
The House thereafter adjourned to reconvene on the next legislative day.
