The National Security Adviser (NSA), Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, has urged Nigerians to support security agencies by providing timely information on suspicious activities, saying early intelligence is crucial to preventing security threats.
Ribadu made the appeal on Thursday in Abuja during the destruction of 2,819 illegal and unserviceable weapons by the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons.
Represented by Dr Dennis Otuaro, Ribadu urged traditional and religious leaders, as well as other Nigerians, to report security threats promptly.
He said timely information from citizens would enable security agencies to respond swiftly and prevent criminal activities before they are carried out.
Ribadu noted that illegal weapons remain a major source of strength for terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other criminal groups operating across the country.
According to him, every illegal weapon recovered and destroyed reduces the capacity of criminals to carry out attacks.
“The destruction of these weapons is part of the Federal Government’s broader strategy to strengthen national security and reduce the spread of illegal firearms across the country,” he said.
He explained that President Bola Tinubu had approved a new security approach focused on intelligence-led operations, stronger collaboration among security agencies, disrupting criminal financing and strengthening partnerships with international allies.
“The new security strategy has recorded significant progress in weakening terrorist networks, strengthening border security and addressing emerging threats. I also want to assure Nigerians that our security agencies remain committed to protecting lives and property across the country,” he said.
