Troops foil ISWAP/JAS attack on military position in Borno

Daily Post about 5 hours 2 mins read

Nigerian troops of 3 Battalion (Mechanised)/24 Task Force Brigade have repelled an attack by suspected Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, and Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad, JAS, terrorists on a military position in Ngala Local Government Area of Borno State.

This was made  known in a post on X by

Zagazola Makama, counter-insurgency and security expert in Lake Chad region.

According to Makama, citing security sources, the attack occurred on June 12 when the insurgents launched coordinated assaults on the troops’ location from the Wurge, Manawaji and Kinuba axes.

Makama stated that the troops responded with sustained firepower, supported by reinforcements from battalion headquarters as well as mortar and artillery support, forcing the attackers to retreat.

Following the failed attack, troops and auxiliary forces conducted a follow-up operation along the terrorists’ withdrawal route towards Wurge at about 5:45 a.m.

During the operation, security personnel recovered three unexploded RPG-7 high-explosive ordnances and two torchlights abandoned by the fleeing insurgents.

Sources said a main battle tank developed technical faults after the engagement, while one soldier sustained injuries from fragments of an RPG explosion. The injured soldier was evacuated to the 3 Battalion Regimental Aid Post for treatment.

Military authorities said clearance and exploitation operations were continuing in the area to prevent the regrouping of terrorist elements.

They reaffirmed their commitment to sustaining ongoing counter-terrorism operations across the North-East.
