Two killed as gunmen attack another mining site in Plateau

Daily Post about 1 hour 2 mins read

Two miners were shot dead on Friday night by gunmen suspected to be Fulani militias at a mining site in Kuru Jenta of Heipang District in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The National Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders Association, BYM, Rwang Tengwong, who confirmed the attack in a statement made available to journalists on Saturday, said the incident occurred at about 11:30 pm while the victims and other miners were carrying out activities at the site.

Tengwong, who described the attack as unprovoked and unfortunate, said it came barely a week after gunmen killed two other miners at another mining site in Rakum village of Jos South LGA.

Tengwon urged security agencies to investigate the incident, identify those responsible, and bring them to justice.

The BYM spokesman further cautioned residents, particularly miners, against mining at night, urging them to remain vigilant and comply with security measures put in place by the government.

He particularly lamented the fact that the attack came at a time when the state government had imposed a curfew on three local government areas, including Barkin Ladi, where the incident took place.

He urged residents to respect the restricted hours, remain vigilant, and avoid activities that could expose them to security risks, while also taking necessary precautions in view of the prevailing security situation in the area.
