NNEWI — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State has urged its members to vote for the party’s candidates in the 2027 general elections and defend their votes, assuring them that the party leadership would handle the monitoring and collation process.
The party also vowed to reclaim the Anambra South Senatorial District seat from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), which won the seat in the senatorial bye-election held after the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
Deputy National Legal Adviser of the PDP, Mr Chinemelum Ubah, made the call at Jideofor Hotel, Nnewi, during the party’s campaign flag-off for its Anambra South senatorial candidate, Prince Samben Nwosu.
Ubah urged the party’s seven local government chairmen and ward executives in Anambra South to return to their respective council areas and wards to mobilise support for Nwosu ahead of the 2027 election.
“I want the people of Anambra South Senatorial District to focus on the game. You should fight the good fight of delivering victory for Prince Samben Nwosu. Vote, defend your vote, we will do the rest, which is to monitor it to the last,” he said.
The event began with a roadshow through some communities in Anambra South in support of the party’s candidate.
Those in attendance included the PDP State Chairman, Prince Casmir Ajulu; State Secretary, Sir Sunny Umenne; State Vice Chairman and Anambra South PDP Chairman, Prince Victor Uba; and other party leaders.
Addressing party supporters, Ajulu expressed confidence that the PDP would win its candidates’ elections in 2027, saying the party was not intimidated by APGA or any other political party.
He claimed that APGA did not win any National Assembly seat in Anambra State during the 2023 general elections, adding that the PDP had previously defeated both APGA and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in National Assembly elections in the state.
“APGA managed to win the last senatorial bye-election after the demise of late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah. PDP is back to take over the seat from APGA come 2027 general election,” Ajulu said.
Also speaking, the PDP Chairman for Anambra South Senatorial District, Prince Victor Uba, said the district was prepared to support Nwosu’s bid.
“Prince Samben Nwosu is a credible candidate. Anambra South will be blessed to have him as their Senator. We are strongly behind him and with our collective efforts, he will surely win the seat,” he said.
The party’s State Secretary, Umenne, said the PDP was optimistic of victory in 2027, describing it as the party to beat in the National Assembly elections.
“We have seen the love displayed by the party faithful during the roadshow, and we are confident that Prince Samben Nwosu is the man to clinch the Senate seat,” he said.
Nwosu, who expressed appreciation for the support he received during the roadshow, said his campaign was based on competence and a commitment to effective representation.
“I am contesting with myself, not with a bag of rice or envelope,” he said.
Nwosu said the turnout demonstrated that the PDP remained active in the state and needed leadership capable of repositioning the party.
“Trust is more than money. When people vote for competence and quality, the issue of a candidate not delivering will be a thing of the past. People are now wise,” he said.
He criticised what he described as past instances of voters supporting candidates because of financial inducements, saying such candidates could subsequently fail to meet the expectations of their constituents.
Nwosu promised that, if elected, he would introduce what he described as a new style of representation that would carry the people along.
He said he had already interacted with traders, business owners and people from different professions across the district, adding that he would continue to consult his constituents, seek their views and align his legislative agenda with their priorities.
The campaign flag-off ended with the formal presentation of the PDP flag to Nwosu, amid cheers from party supporters.
