We are tired of burying our people – Kebbi communities seek urgent security intervention

Daily Post 9 minutes 3 mins read

Residents of Alelu, Kimba, Jandutsi and Jadadi communities in Jega Local Government Area of Kebbi State have appealed to Governor Nasir Idris to urgently intervene over alleged killings, abductions and destruction of homes by armed men.

In an open letter dated October 9, 2026, Sufiyan, a resident of Alelu who wrote on behalf of the affected communities, said residents were living in fear as persistent attacks continued to disrupt their lives and livelihoods.

“We are tired of burying our people. The night has become something to fear,” he said, describing the situation confronting residents of the communities.

Sufiyan said the attacks had forced residents to abandon their farms, while some families had lost their homes and children had been displaced within their own state.

“Your Excellency, Governor Kaura of Gwandu, we are crying out to you,” he said, appealing for urgent government intervention to prevent further loss of lives and destruction of property.

The resident outlined three major demands, which include the deployment of permanent security personnel along the Alelu-Kimba-Jandutsi axis, humanitarian assistance for families whose homes had been destroyed, and a visit by the governor to assess the situation firsthand.

“If these villages die, the heart of Kebbi has been killed,” he said, adding, “This is not politics; it is a cry for survival.”

Responding to the concerns, the Kebbi State Police Command acknowledged the security challenges confronting residents of Alelu, Kimba, Jandutsi, Jadadi and other communities in Jega LGA.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Bashir Usman, told DAILY POST that security agencies had continued to respond to distress calls, repel attacks and intensify operations against criminal elements in the affected areas.

“The Kebbi State Police Command acknowledges the security challenges confronting residents of Alelu, Kimba, Jandutsi, Jadadi and other communities in Jega LGA,” Usman said.

He attributed the threat partly to its cross-border nature, saying the security challenges emanated from a neighbouring state.

“Despite the cross-border nature of the security threat from a neighbouring state, we have continuously responded to distress calls, repelled several attempts of attacks and intensified efforts to rid the affected areas of criminal elements,” he said.

The police spokesperson also disclosed that the command had suffered a casualty during its operations, with a police inspector recently losing his life.

The command appealed to youths and residents to refrain from blocking the Kebbi-Sokoto Highway to protest the security situation, warning that such actions could affect other road users and divert security personnel from ongoing operations.

“The command appeals to youths and residents of the areas to desist from blocking the Kebbi-Sokoto Highway, as such actions infringe upon the rights of others, further overstretch security personnel and divert attention from ongoing operations,” Usman said.
