PORT HARCOURT — A young woman identified simply as Eno has died after she was struck by a vehicle travelling in a convoy within the premises of the Rivers State University in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday on one of the roads within the university campus. It was not immediately clear whether the deceased was a student of the institution.

Sources said the vehicles involved in the convoy were allegedly driven by students of the university.

According to eyewitness accounts, some members of the convoy fled the scene immediately after it became apparent that one of the vehicles had hit the victim.

A source disclosed that the university’s security personnel and the police were promptly alerted, leading to the closure of all exit points from the campus in an effort to prevent those involved from escaping.

Operatives of the Nkpolu Divisional Police Headquarters, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Henry Ogbuefi, in collaboration with the university’s internal security team, subsequently arrested two suspects identified as Onunaka K. and Daniel Ikechi.

The suspects were reportedly driving a Toyota Camry Spider and a Mercedes-Benz E300 respectively.

As of press time, both suspects were being held at the Nkpolu Divisional Police Headquarters in Mile 3, Diobu, while the body of the deceased had been recovered and deposited in a mortuary.

The university’s spokesperson, Victor Banigo, confirmed that the institution was aware of the incident and said an official statement would be issued later.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Blessing Agaba, confirmed the development.

“Two suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while the corpse has been retrieved and deposited in the mortuary,” she said.

Police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
