Argentina international, Nicolas Tagliafico, has said that the Albiceleste’s defeat in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final against Spain was caused by a mix of exhaustion, subpar pitch conditions and high temperatures that were adjusted for television scheduling.
The defending champions were pushed into extra time on two occasions during the four knockout matches leading up to the final.
They also managed to come back from a two-goal deficit in the last 11 minutes against Egypt in the Round of 16, as well as from a goal down in the final five minutes of the semi-final against England.
Messi and his teammates triumphed over Cabo Verde with a score of 3-2 in extra time, followed by a similar 3-2 victory against Egypt in the Round of 16.
They again required extra time to secure a 3-1 win over 10-man Switzerland in the quarter-finals, before defeating England 2-1 in the semi-finals.
In contrast, Spain had significantly less time on the field, allowing only one goal in their four knockout matches, and they also benefited from an additional day to prepare for the final, which they won 1-0 in extra time.
“I do not wish for this to be perceived as excuses, but we arrived at the final both physically and mentally drained,” Tagliafico remarked (according to Albiceleste Talk).
“Spain performed exceptionally well and rightfully earned their victory. We did not play well. The pitch for the final was inadequate. MetLife was dry, and the heat was intense, compounded by our early kickoff due to television considerations.
“We must recall that spirit, the determination we exhibited in our relentless pursuit. It was remarkable. Against Egypt, I genuinely believed we were in dire straits. I thought, ‘What now?’
“Yet, we demonstrated resilience to persist, perhaps without any extraordinary displays, but with sheer heart. Enduring each match in that manner is incredibly taxing.”
Despite the Albiceleste failing to register a shot on Spain’s goal, goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez’s remarkable performance, which included a record 12 saves, nearly kept his team in contention, even after Enzo Fernandez received a red card in stoppage time of the second half.
Ultimately, he was defeated by substitute, Ferran Torres’ strike in the 106th minute.
