World Teachers’ Day: Obi demands better welfare

…Calls for priority funding of education, infrastructure

Former Anambra State governor and presidential candidate of Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, Peter Obi, has called for improved welfare, working conditions and professional dignity for Nigerian teachers.

Obi made the call in a message posted on his X platform on Monday to mark World Teachers’ Day.

He described teaching as one of the most important professions in any society, saying teachers play a critical role in shaping minds, nurturing character and preparing future citizens, professionals and leaders.

According to him, the quality of teachers will significantly determine the quality of Nigeria’s human capital and, ultimately, the country’s future.

“I salute our teachers for their resilience, dedication, and immense sacrifices, often made under difficult socio-economic conditions,” Obi said.

He urged governments to do more to improve teachers’ welfare, ensure prompt payment of their salaries, provide conducive working environments and equip them with the tools required for effective teaching.

“The dignity of the teaching profession must be restored,” he said.

Obi also called for greater investment in education, arguing that Nigeria could not effectively tackle out-of-school children, unemployment, poverty and underdevelopment without sustained investment in the sector.

He said education should receive greater priority in national planning and budgeting, with particular attention given to teachers and educational infrastructure.

“To every Nigerian teacher, I thank you for your service and for continuing to build our nation, one child at a time. Please remain steadfast and hopeful,” he said.

Obi expressed optimism that the Nigeria Nigerians desire was achievable, saying building such a country must begin with investment in its people.

“With improved education, a new Nigeria that will be okay if possible,” he added.
