‘You’re exact opposite of World Cup’ – US lawmaker slams Trump for refusing to leave stage

Daily Post 1 day 2 mins read

US Congresswoman, Yassamin Ansari, has said that President Donald Trump was an unwelcome figure during the 2026 World Cup presentation ceremony, as he lingered on stage while Spain celebrated their victory.

La Roja triumphed over the 10-man defending champions Argentina with a score of 1-0 in extra time during the final held in New Jersey on Sunday, July 19. The Albiceleste played the final 30 minutes with a numerical disadvantage following the late dismissal of midfielder Enzo Fernandez in regulation time.

Ferran Torres struck the decisive goal in the 106th minute, assisted by fellow substitute Nico Williams, successfully beating Emiliano Martinez after 12 attempts.

Despite Albiceleste’s efforts to stage a late comeback with only 10 players, none of their three shots on the La Roja goal were on target.

After US President Trump presented the World Cup trophy to Spain’s captain Rodri, he remained on stage for an extended period. In several celebration photos of La Roja, FIFA edited Trump out, with Ansari stating to Meidas Touch on Capitol Hill (as reported by Daily Mail):

“Nobody wanted him there. I love the World Cup. It demonstrated how much we share in common rather than what separates us, and Donald Trump embodies the exact opposite of that.”

The US President attended his first match of the 2026 tournament during the final, where Spain emerged victorious, marking them as the seventh team to win the competition at least twice.
