Archbishop Emeritus of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has urged the Ndigbo to exercise their freedom to choose their preferred candidates in the 2027 elections, following comments by Anambra State Governor Chukwuma Soludo on how the people should use their votes.
Speaking during an interview, Onaiyekan was asked about Soludo’s remarks and his advice to the Igbo people ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Cardinal said he was not fully aware of what Soludo had told the Ndigbo, but stressed that voters should be allowed to make their own choices at the polls.
“I don’t know what Soludo has told the Ndigbo. All I can say is that the Ndigbo should be allowed to freely choose who should be their president and governors,” he said.
Onaiyekan also argued that it is not the responsibility of governors to dictate how citizens should vote. According to him, governors, like every other eligible voter, have their own ballots to cast.
“It’s not the duty of governor to teach, to tell people how they should vote. The governors will have their own votes now. Every governor will be able to vote. Will vote for himself. Let others do,” he added.
The Cardinal further described elections as one of the key opportunities citizens have to express their views and preferences through their votes.
He therefore encouraged the Ndigbo to make full use of that opportunity and freely make their choices at the ballot box.
“At least that’s the only opportunity that we have to express our mind. Let us do it,” Onaiyekan said.
