Members of the Kwara State House of Assembly have endorsed the Speaker, Yakubu Danladi-Salihu, for the 2027 governorship election, while dismissing reports suggesting that a primary election had not been conducted to pick a candidate.
The lawmakers made their position known during a press briefing at the Assembly Complex in Ilorin.
Addressing journalists on behalf of the legislators, the Majority Leader of the Assembly, Abdulkadri Magaji, described reports about the primary election not being conducted within the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state as false, misleading, and capable of causing unnecessary tension within the party.
According to him, a primary election has been conducted by the APC to elect a governorship candidate for the 2027 election in Kwara State.
The lawmakers said their endorsement of Danladi-Salihu was a demonstration of confidence in his leadership qualities, legislative experience, and contributions to the development of the state.
Magaji urged party members and the public to disregard rumours of the primary election process not being conducted, stressing that the party followed due process and its constitutional provisions for candidate selection.
The legislators reaffirmed their commitment to the unity and progress of the APC in the state and pledged continued support for initiatives aimed at advancing good governance and development in Kwara.
They also called on party stakeholders to remain focused on strengthening the party ahead of future political activities rather than engaging in divisive speculations.
He assured the members of support for President Bola Tinubu and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for the 2027 election.
A member representing Ilorin East Constituency, Rukayat Shitti, said opposition to the speaker’s emergence as the preferred governorship candidate was driven largely by personal interests rather than the collective aspirations of party members.
