2027: Labour Party unveils Bintu Konto as VP candidate

By John Alechenu

The Labour Party, LP, has unveiled Hajja Bintu Konto as its vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

She will run alongside the party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Chibuzo Okereke.

The party said the choice followed consultations with key stakeholders and was aimed at presenting Nigerians with a ticket built on competence, integrity and inclusion.

National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ken Asogwa, who made this public in Abuja on Saturday, described Konto as a public health expert and humanitarian leader with over 30 years’ experience in healthcare delivery, community development and humanitarian intervention.

He further said, “She retired from Catholic Relief Services after serving in several leadership roles, including Community and Government Liaison Officer. She worked extensively in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States, coordinating response and mobilisation efforts for internally displaced persons and other vulnerable groups.

“A trained Nurse, Midwife and Public Health Specialist, Konto holds a Master’s degree in Public Health. She has also lectured in Community Health and currently serves on the Country Coordinating Mechanism of the Global Fund in Nigeria. She is National Treasurer of the Civil Society for Malaria Control, Immunization and Nutrition, ACOMIN.

“Fluent in English, Hausa, Kanuri, Shuwa, Fulani and Bura, Konto has led engagements with government, traditional institutions and civil society on health, nutrition, WASH and humanitarian programmes.”

The Labour Party said her nomination underscores its commitment to gender inclusion, national unity and competent leadership from across the country.

“With Hajja Konto, the ticket brings compassion, administrative experience and a clear grasp of Nigeria’s development challenges, especially for women, children and communities affected by insecurity,” the party stated.

It added that the Okereke/Konto ticket represents “a new generation of purposeful, people-centred leadership” focused on restoring hope, strengthening institutions, reviving the economy and improving security.

The party urged Nigerians to support the ticket ahead of the 2027 polls.
