2027: PDP recovered, ready to reclaim dominance — Wabara

As Abia governorship candidate, others receive Certificates of Return

By Steve Oko

UMUAHIA — Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adolphus Wabara, has declared that the party has overcome its internal crisis and is positioning itself to reclaim its place as a dominant political force ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wabara made the assertion while congratulating candidates who received their Certificates of Return at a PDP stakeholders’ meeting held in Abuja on Wednesday, including the party’s Abia State governorship candidate, Dr. Anthony Iheanyichukwu Ibeabuchi.

According to a statement issued by the Chairman of the Abia PDP Caretaker Committee, Hon. Ikpegbu Emeka-Yellow, the presentation ceremony formed part of a high-level stakeholders’ engagement aimed at strengthening party structures and consolidating preparations for the 2027 elections.

The statement said Dr. Ibeabuchi, a 57-year-old banker and investment analyst, received his Certificate of Return alongside other PDP governorship candidates from across the country as party leaders reaffirmed their commitment to rebuilding the PDP and positioning it for electoral success in 2027.

The stakeholders’ meeting, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, was presided over by the National Chairman of the Interim National Working Committee, Barrister Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN.

Among the Abia candidates presented with Certificates of Return were Sunday Nmaju for Abia North Senatorial District; Chijioke Solomon for Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency; Emmanuel Agwu Ukpong for Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency; and Innocent Chibundu for Ikwuano/Umuahia Federal Constituency.

Others included Ndubuisi Ukagha for Bende Federal Constituency; Emeka Ado for Isuikwuato/Umunneochi Federal Constituency; and Roland Ihediuwa for Obingwa/Ugwunagbo/Osisioma Federal Constituency.

Twenty-one PDP candidates for seats in the Abia State House of Assembly also received their Certificates of Return.

The statement described Dr. Ibeabuchi, an indigene of Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area, as an accomplished banker with more than 23 years of experience in the financial sector, particularly in micro and retail banking.

Speaking on the significance of the exercise, Emeka-Yellow said the issuance of the certificates marked another milestone in the PDP’s preparations for the 2027 elections.

He said the party was fully mobilised and determined to reclaim power in Abia State and at the national level.

“The PDP is not only ready to participate in the 2027 elections but is resolute in its mission to return to government. Our candidates represent competence, credibility and the aspirations of the people. We are confident that Abians and Nigerians will once again entrust the PDP with leadership,” he said.

According to him, the party’s renewed unity, strengthened structures and people-oriented agenda have positioned it for a strong comeback in 2027.

In his remarks, Wabara congratulated the candidates and urged party members nationwide to remain united and steadfast in support of the party and its leadership.

He cautioned members against being distracted by what he described as “political undertakers” allegedly working with external forces to weaken the PDP.

The former Senate President maintained that the party had successfully weathered its challenges and emerged stronger.

According to him, the PDP has fully recovered from its internal crisis and is now firmly positioned to reclaim its place as a dominant political force in Nigeria.

Wabara also commended the Emeka-Yellow-led Caretaker Committee in Abia State for its efforts in reviving and repositioning the party.

“The signs of revival are evident. The party is united, focused and ready for the task ahead. With the quality of leadership currently in place and the calibre of candidates presented, the PDP is on course for a remarkable comeback,” he said.

He further urged opposition parties to resist attempts to weaken democratic institutions, stressing that a vibrant opposition remains essential to the survival of democracy.
