Actress Anita Joseph turns “Akara” seller

There isn’t much superstar Nollywood actress Anita Joseph hasn’t done to remain afloat in her career and in life. She would get away with most things on account of her fame and positive vibes, even including selling what is known widely in local parlance as Akara (bean cake) to augment her livelihood.

Before this little write-up hits home as a survival tactic to make sense of the hard times biting down on most Nigerians, Joseph, according to her in a chat with Potpourri, has only succumbed to a labour of love to find vent for a secret yearning.

Okay, the actress sells Akara these days, but not in the usual sense or at some street corner. She’s doing it in grand style, with the poshest of settings. She’s actually a restaurateur, and her Akara place is named “Eko Akara Bistro” in the heart of Lagos.

“I bought the restaurant from someone. The first attraction was the name, then the Akara. Oh My God (OMG),” she gleefully told Potpourri. “So when they wanted to sell, I grabbed the offer.”

“I always make Akara every two days at home. It was quite stressful, so seeing where to get it anytime, even on Sundays, got me very excited,” she added to assert her love for her latest business venture.

Despite the restaurant’s name, Joseph noted that Eko Akara Bistro offers far more than bean cakes. The menu features a wide range of local and continental dishes, including burgers, pepper soup, chicken, goat meat, turkey, sandwiches, American and African breakfast options, ewa agoyin, yam, plantain and potato porridge, catfish, roasted fish, grilled turkey, salads and shawarma.

The move marks another business venture for the actress, who continues to diversify her interests beyond the entertainment industry while tapping into Nigeria’s vibrant food and hospitality sector.
