Uganda’s Minister of Local Government, Hon. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, has been nominated for The Unstoppable African Cabinet Minister of the Year award, with public voting closing today, October 5, 2026.
Barugahara announced the nomination in a post on his X account, calling on Ugandans and other Africans to support his bid in the continental awards.
The nomination places the Ugandan minister among African leaders being recognised for their contribution to public service, leadership and national development.
The Unstoppable African Awards are a new pan-African platform established to recognise individuals and institutions making a tangible impact across the continent. The awards cover leadership and governance, business, innovation, media, arts, sports and community development.
Barugahara’s nomination comes at a time when he has been undertaking countrywide local government oversight activities, including inspections of government institutions and programmes.
In recent weeks, the minister has stepped up his campaign against alleged mismanagement and misuse of public resources in local governments, with his inspections attracting both public attention and criticism from some stakeholders.
The awards’ public voting opened on September 21 and closes on October 5, 2026, according to the nomination poster.
The inaugural Unstoppable African Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in Nairobi, Kenya, on October 31, 2026, bringing together leaders and personalities from across Africa. The organisers say winners will be determined through a combination of public voting and assessment by an awards academy comprising professionals from across the continent.
Barugahara’s nomination therefore gives Uganda an opportunity to feature prominently in one of the emerging continental platforms celebrating African leadership and public service.
