Deregistration of Political Parties: Silence will kill democracy – CUPP

By John Alechenu

ABUJA – Acting National Chairman of the Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, Peter Ameh, has called on Nigerians to resist what he described as “hostile executive rascality and brazen judicial overreach” in the deregistration of political parties.

Ameh made the call in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday, recalling the 2019 deregistration of political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, which was later upheld by the courts.

‘We should have stood together’

He said six years ago, opposition parties stood their ground against the undemocratic deregistration, with Chief Ralph Okey Nwosu and the African Democratic Congress, ADC, among those who resisted firmly.

“Had we remained united and collectively resisted, we would have significantly weakened the systematic plot to deregister political parties that deserve the chance to grow organically,” Ameh stated.

“The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,” Ameh added, quoting philosopher Edmund Burke.

He said the deregistration of parties, no matter how small, sets a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy and must not be allowed to stand.

“This hostile executive rascality and brazen judicial overreach must not be allowed to stand,” he declared.
