In a landmark achievement for The Gambia, Dr Omar Jagne, chief executive officer of Africmed International Hospital, has been unanimously elected vice chair of the Africa Regional Antidoping Organisation (RADO). The election took place during the recent meeting of member country representatives in Cairo, Egypt, on 16th and 17th September.
This marks the first time The Gambia has held such a prestigious position within RADO, underscoring the nation’s growing influence in continental health and sports governance. Dr Jagne’s appointment is seen as a major step forward in strengthening The Gambia’s role in promoting integrity and fair play in sports across Africa.
RADO convenes annually to set the agenda for antidoping education, monitoring, and testing under the auspices of the World Antidoping Agency (WADA). Among the key issues discussed at this year’s meeting was preparation for the adoption of the new 2027 Antidoping Code, which will guide future policies and practices across the continent.
Member countries of RADO include Ethiopia, Egypt, Uganda, Kenya, Sudan, Rwanda, Somalia, Burundi, South Sudan, The Gambia, Eritrea, Tanzania, and Sierra Leone.
Dr Jagne’s election is widely regarded as a proud moment for The Gambia, reflecting the country’s commitment to advancing sports ethics and health standards. It also signals a new era of Gambian leadership in regional and international sports governance.
