DSS Frees Kaduna Farmer, Nura Idris Wrongly Held Over Boko Haram Allegations

InformationNG about 2 hours 2 mins read

The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Oluwatosin Adeola Ajayi, has ordered the release of a farmer from Kaduna State, Nura Idris, after an internal review found no basis for allegations linking him to Boko Haram.

Idris, who hails from Soba Local Government Area of Kaduna State and earns his livelihood through farming and livestock rearing, was initially arrested by a separate security agency in Suleja, Niger State, back in June 2024 over suspected terrorist connections, before he was eventually transferred into DSS custody.

Following a thorough investigation, a DSS review panel concluded that there was no credible evidence to support the claims against him. Acting on the panel’s findings, the Director-General approved his immediate release and authorised a compensation payment of three million naira to assist him in meeting his immediate needs, alongside a pledge from the Service to support the rebuilding of his business.

Speaking shortly after regaining his freedom, Idris expressed appreciation to the DSS leadership, describing his treatment in custody as fair and praying for blessings upon the Director-General for the gesture extended to him.

His father, Yusuf Idris, also voiced gratitude toward the DSS leadership, commending the compassion shown in the matter and giving assurances that the compensation would be put toward productive use for the family.

Security sources disclosed that Idris’s release forms part of a broader internal review exercise launched by the DSS to revisit inherited and prolonged detention cases, with the aim of identifying and freeing individuals who had been wrongfully held. According to the sources, the Service also extends medical, psychological, and reintegration assistance to certain released detainees, including support in setting up businesses to help them restart their lives.

The sources further revealed that more than 30 cases have so far been reviewed under the initiative, with compensation payments exceeding three hundred million naira disbursed in total, an effort described as reflecting the DSS’s broader commitment to accountability, justice, and the protection of citizens’ rights.
