Father dies while attempting to rescue daughter from Well in Kano

A 45-year-old man, Abubakar Abdullahi, has died while attempting to rescue his 15-year-old daughter, Fiddausi Abubakar, who accidentally fell into an old dry well in Yancibi Village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State.

The Kano State Fire Service confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Wednesday by its Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.

According to the statement, the Tsanyawa Fire Service Branch received a distress call on Monday evening, July 21, reporting that a father and his daughter had fallen into a well.

Firefighters were immediately deployed to the scene and commenced rescue operations.

However, the service said the operation was suspended that night due to darkness and the challenging conditions surrounding the well.

It added that an emergency rescue team was later dispatched from the Fire Service headquarters in the early hours of Tuesday to assist in the operation.

“Upon arrival, the team successfully recovered both victims from the well. They were rescued unconscious and were later confirmed dead,” the statement said.

The Fire Service said the bodies were subsequently handed over to the Village Head of Yancibi, Shamsu Sani.

Preliminary findings indicated that the teenage girl accidentally fell into the abandoned well, while her father entered in an attempt to rescue her but became trapped, resulting in the death of both victims.

The Kano State Fire Service expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and advised residents against entering wells or similar confined spaces without proper safety equipment.

It also urged members of the public to immediately contact emergency response agencies whenever such incidents occur to prevent further loss of lives.
