KANO — No fewer than five people lost their lives, while property worth ₦120.45 million was destroyed in fire and other emergency incidents across Kano State in June, the Kano State Fire Service has said.

The figures were contained in the Service’s operational report for June, released on Tuesday by its Public Relations Officer, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.

According to the report, the Fire Service responded to 30 fire outbreaks, seven rescue operations and one false alarm across the state’s 44 local government areas during the month.

It stated that five people died in various fire and emergency incidents, while three others were rescued by firefighters.

The report added that property valued at ₦120.45 million was destroyed by fire during the period, while the prompt intervention of firefighters helped save property worth ₦481.8 million.

Commenting on the report, the Director of the Kano State Fire Service, Alhaji Sani Anas, urged residents to exercise caution in handling fire to prevent avoidable incidents.

He advised members of the public to ensure all sources of fire are completely extinguished after use.

“We urge members of the public to exercise caution when using fire and ensure that all sources of fire are completely extinguished after use to prevent avoidable fire outbreaks,” he said.

Anas also urged parents and guardians to closely monitor their children, particularly during the rainy season, to reduce drowning incidents.

He warned against allowing children to play around puddles, ponds, rivers or uncovered wells.

The director reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to protecting lives and property through prompt emergency response, public safety awareness and collaboration with residents across the state.
